Spring 2020 Season Canceled

UPDATED June 20, 2020

We hope all of our league families are healthy and well. Since March, the MJNMLL Board of Directors has been meeting each month via Zoom, reviewing the latest information and recommendations regarding COVID-19, and discussing a way forward. The entire Board appreciates your patience as we have navigated this situation over the past 3 months. It is with great disappointment we have decided to cancel the Spring 2020 season for MJNMLL. This includes all divisions from T-ball to Junior Baseball and Senior Softball. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Little League International guidance, availability of the playing fields, and Virginia state recommendations for the resumption of play, MJNMLL has decided that we are unable to conduct a Spring 2020 season the way that we all know and love - with proper safety, instruction, preparation, and competition that does not detract from the complete Little League experience. This was a tough decision, and we are very disappointed to have to cancel, but feel it is necessary. Our goal every season is to provide an opportunity for our children to experience the fun, fellowship, and competition that our families have come to expect.

Additionally, our Annual Meeting, which is typically held on the 2nd Sunday of June, is postponed until we can safely gather in a large group. We do so out of an abundance of caution for our players, fans, and volunteers.

For those of you who have registered for the Spring 2020 season, below are the procedures and guidance for how the League will be handling registration fees because of the cancellation, unanimously approved by the MJNMLL Board of Directors. These apply only to registrations for the Spring 2020 season.

Our league operates on funds received from registrations, donations, and sponsorships, and our expenses are budgeted accordingly. The refund procedures and guidance for the cancellation of the Spring 2020 season are as follows:

  • The deadline for a refund request is Friday, July 10, 2020.
  • The $3 per transaction registration fee charged by SportsConnect is non-refundable. The transaction fee is paid directly to SportsConnect for their services, and MJNMLL does not receive the money from that fee.
  • Registration fees can either be refunded (less $15 - see next bullet), applied to Spring 2021 registration, or donated to MJNMLL. If applied to Spring 2021, we will apply the full registration fee to that season.
  • The refund for each registration will be less $15 to cover some of the sunk cost the League incurred in preparation for the Spring 2020 season. Before the COVID-19 pandemic began uniforms were ordered and printed; and our associated Little League International dues, insurance, and fees were paid in full.
  • Each player will receive their shirt and hat. A plan and schedule for distribution of the uniforms and any remaining apparel orders will be developed and shared with the league.
  • If you paid the $40 non-volunteer fee, you can either request a refund of that fee or donate the fee to the league.

When considering your decision regarding the registration fee, please know the League will likely be facing additional costs in equipment, cleaning, sanitation supplies, etc., as part of providing a safe and enjoyable environment for fans and players in the age of COVID-19. For example, recommendations are for all players to have their own equipment and limit the sharing of equipment as much as possible. These recommendations will require the League to purchase additional helmets, catcher's equipment, bats, and additional baseballs and softballs. Donating your Spring 2020 registration fees can help offset some of those costs.

Please fill out the form linked here FOR EACH PARTICIPANT by July 10:

Looking forward, we anticipate having a Fall 2020 season of baseball and softball. Exact details for the scope and scale of a fall season will be determined in the next 30-45 days. Additionally, the Board will be making plans for use of the indoor practice and hitting facility this fall and winter once more details are known about the reopening of schools.

Rest assured, we will be back at the ballpark and the MJNMLL Board will make sure it is an environment that is safe for participants and spectators and also allows for everyone to enjoy the full Little League experience.

UPDATED April 14, 2020

We are all disappointed we cannot be on the baseball or softball field, but the health and safety of our players, volunteers and families is our top priority. That said the MJNMLL Board of Directors is providing the league with an update on where things currently stand.

Spring Season

As you have seen Little League International (LLI) recommended suspending all league activities first until April 6, then until May 11. The Governor of Virginia then issued a stay at home order until at least June 10 th which supersedes the LLI recommendations. At this point we are still hoping to have a season. The MJNMLL board has met via conference call twice in the last 5 weeks to discuss our options and have decided we have time to wait and see how the COVID-19 pandemic plays out over the next 20-40 days before making a final decision on the season. We do not know for sure when we will be able to resume play. We will do all we can to give our players the chance to play this summer if we can do so safely and abide by any and all state and local restrictions.

Calendar Raffle

Given the current restrictions on non-essential travel, group gathers, and the suspension of our season we are canceling the Calendar Raffle fundraiser. If you purchased a calendar raffle ticket and would like a full refund please contact the person you purchased the ticket from or [email protected] by May 1, 2020 to request a refund.

Apparel Orders

Apparel orders are in and some were delivered to Team Parents before the suspension of league activities. Once it is safe to do so and restrictions on non-essential travel are relaxed, we will get the rest of the apparel orders distributed.

Finally, on behalf of the Board, we appreciate your patience as we work through the disruptions the COVID-19 pandemic has caused. If you have any questions, feel free to contact us. We look forward to seeing everyone at the ballfield as soon as is safely possible.

UPDATED March 20, 2020

Following Little League International and Virginia District 3 guidelines, the suspension of our season has been extended through May 11. This includes any practices, games, or other league activities. We know this is a frustrating circumstance of the coronavirus pandemic, and has created uncertain times for you, your children, and the league. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we progress through this unfortunate situation and try to do our part to slow the spread COVID-19 and help get things back to normal as quickly as possible.

Like us, you may have questions regarding tournaments, volunteer opportunities, fundraisers, games, and practices. The MJNMLL BOD is taking all of these items under consideration and will communicate as we know more. More information about
coronavirus as it pertains to Little League can be found here

We have been informed that once the season resumes Little League will be considerate of the shortened seasons and they are going to establish an interim policy for tournament eligibility for the 2020 tournament season. They are working through all possible scenarios for the 2020 Little League International Tournament and tournament eligibility for leagues and players in various divisions of play. MJNMLL has been working hard to prepare to provide a great Little League experience for the families of our community and has already ordered equipment, jerseys, and other associated items for the season. Our intent is to provide as much opportunity as possible for baseball and softball to be played this season.

We urge you to be patient as we work through this ever-evolving situation, with the hopes of providing opportunities to play Little League throughout this spring and summer. We will remain in contact with you through email, our Facebook page, and on our website as we evaluate and make decisions for this season. You can also find additional information on the Little League Coronavirus Resources page.

In addition, the Virginia Department of Health has set up a page with details of their efforts in monitoring the spread of the disease:

Please follow CDC recommendations on how to prevent the spread of the disease (; including avoiding close contact with others, washing your hands regularly, and avoid touching your eyes, mouth, and nose with unwashed hands. In addition, you can take steps to protect others, especially our older population, by staying home if you're sick, covering your coughs and sneezes, and cleaning and disinfecting surfaces daily.

With all of that being said, just because we cannot have official activities it does not mean your sons and daughters have to go without some practice. Take this pause in Little League to get outside, play catch, or work on fundamentals. Watch our Facebook page for tips and things you can do at home to have your player ready for May.

Thank you for your understanding.
